Mike Nichols was the best player on the ice that night. He had already scored one goal for Monroe High School, while assisting on two others, and was pushing for more when everything changed. While off-balance, Mike was checked into the boards head first at high speed and fractured his C-5 vertebrae. The broken neck resulted in Mike becoming a quadriplegic, and that is when his new mission in life began.
The next day after his accident, Mike vowed to someday return to the very ice that left him paralyzed and stand up on his own two feet - on skates if he has his choice. Since that day two years ago, Mike has met many others whose daily lives are restricted to wheelchairs, like Rutgers own Eric LeGrand, who he now considers a close friend. Like the others, Mike's dream is to live to see a world without wheelchairs. To help make his dream a reality, Mike joined forces with Team Reeve - the peer-to-peer fundraising arm of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation - to help raise funds toward its mission: to cure spinal cord injury by funding innovative research and improve the quality of life for people living with paralysis.
The Rutgers University Ice Knights and Villanova University Ice Cats are proud to partner with Mike Nichols to donate all proceeds from their Outdoor Classic hockey game on Saturday, January 9th 2016 to The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. Mike Nichols has requested that all money raised from this event be donated to the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.
