Back in early December, Goaltender Chris Marsillo got the word that he would be given an opportunity that no other Scarlet Knight in Rutgers Ice Hockey's 124 year history had been given: the opportunity to don the USA Hockey sweater.  Marsillo was invited to Team USA's camp in Boston and given an opportunity to compete for a roster spot at the 2017 World University Games in Kazakhstan.  The team would be comprised of the best ACHA players in the country.

Following good showings in practice, Crispy saw action in two games including saving 8 of 9 shots in a start against the EHL All Stars, and relief action against D1 Holy Cross.

At the conclusion of camp, Marsillo earned his roster spot as Team USA's third goalie becoming the first Scarlet Knight in school history to do so.  After much contemplation, Crispy put his Rutgers teammates first and respectfully declined USA Hockey's offer.

"I didn't think it was appropriate for me to leave my (Rutgers) team behind and go out there and potentially just watch two other goalies play," Marsillo said. "It didn't make sense for me to drop everything and go."

If Marsillo would have accepted, Rutgers would have been without their number 1 goalie for potentially 7 games.  The Winter World University games take place from January 28th - February 9th which would have caused Rutgers to be without Marsillo for a big road series against Stony Brook.

"We told him this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is way bigger than his responsibilities to us, so do whatever you want to do,'" Rutgers hockey general manager Adrian Klaassen said. "It says that he's a loyal kid who wants to do right by the people who mean the most to him."

Marsillo is back between the pipes for Rutgers on Friday January 20th vs Ohio University, 7pm at Codey Arena in West Orange, New Jersey.
