After completing an undefeated regular season, the D2 Ice Knights won their first league playoff championship on Sunday afternoon at Grundy Arena.

Sunday’s game against the University of Scranton was the third time the two teams met in the spring semester.  The two previous meetings were close, hard fought games and Sunday’s matinee proved to be no different.

Rutgers was able to ride out a strong start from Scranton thanks to stand out goalkeeping from freshman Anderw Krynicki, who finished the night with 31 saves.. The Ice Knights were able to turn play in their favor. Tommy Fisher scored two first period goals to give Rutgers the lead.  Tyler Mischenko grew the lead to 3 in the second period which saw the Ice Knights see more of the puck.  Junior Tom Savino contributed with two assists.

In the third period Scranton shrunk the lead to 3-2 but were unable to find the equalizer.  The final minutes saw stand out defensive efforts from defensemen Sean Conheeny, Ryan Levy and J.T. Fearon and forwards Danny Kukyev and Eric Affrunti.

As regular season champions, Rutgers received a bye into the semi-final of the tournament.  In their first playoff game on Saturday night the Ice Knights defeated LaSalle Univeristy 5-2 including a four point night from sophomore Cory Zrinko who led the way with three goals and an assist.  The other goals were scored by Peter Krzewkinski and Seth Crockett.  Tyler Mischenko had three assists in the game.

Over the course of the weekend goalie Andrew Krynicki stopped 57 of 61, good for a 0.934 save percentage.
