This Saturday, January 9th, the Rutgers University ACHA D1 hockey team will resume its 2015-2016 campaign.
After 16 games, the team’s record stands at 8-7-1, already doubling their win total from all of last season. A weekend sweep of Delaware (5-0, 7-4), and a 4-2 victory over hard-hitting (#12 ranked) rival Lebanon Valley College set the pace for Rutgers early on. A pair of wins over Duquesne (5-2, 7-3) followed by a solid 4-2 win over U. of Rhode Island ended a seven game homestand before the team traveled to Lynchburg, VA to take on Liberty University.
The fall semester saw high levels of point production from juniors Brian Gnad and Kevin Fitch, and sophomore CJ Maksut. Gnad, one of the team captains, currently leads Rutgers in goals (13), assists (15), and points (28). Maksut is second, with 17 points (11G-6A). Fitch is third on the team, with 16 points in 16 games (3G-13A). Offensively, Rutgers is on pace to almost double its “goals for” total from last year. Currently, the team averages 3.4 goals per game (54 goals over 16 games). In net, rookie goaltender Chris Marsillo has found himself a home at Rutgers. His 3.03 GAA and .894 save % have kept him in for all 8 Rutgers victories so far this season. During that time, he has posted 2 shutouts; a 5-0 win over Delaware, and a 4-0 defeat of West Chester.
With only four home games remaining on the schedule, the Knights will spend a majority of the Spring semester on the road. Difficult trips to Rhode Island (Jan. 15-16) and Stony Brook (Jan. 23-24) await the team the first two weeks. Rutgers will also travel to Lebanon Valley College, West Chester University, and the University of Delaware before playoffs begin, hosted by LVC. The 2016 national tournament is in Chicago and occurs March 3 - March 8th.
Keep an eye out for special events and home games during the 2016 spring semester. January 9th, Rutgers takes on Villanova for its 2016 Winter Classic game. Puck drop is at 6pm, at Navesink Country Club in Middletown, NJ. On January 29th at 8pm, Rutgers will have its annual Military Appreciation Night, against Lebanon Valley College. February 6th at 3:30pm, Rutgers will host West Chester University. In the final home game this season, Rutgers will honor the team’s seniors, as it takes on the University of Delaware on February 13th at 3:30pm.
The new semester also brings a few changes to the Ice Knights roster. Seniors Jake Pyhel and Pat Jarczewski have both completed the duration of their eligibility and are unable to return for the second semester. On the flip side, the Knights will add transfer Forward Kevin Rivera (5-10, 170lbs / Belmar, NJ) to the roster. Kevin spent the two previous seasons playing for NCAA Div. 3 Manhattanville College and the Philadelphia Little Flyers (EHL) prior to that.
