Rutgers Academic All-Americans, 2012Published on: July 17, 2012
They won the league three years in a row. They made it to Nationals three years in a row. They had upset victories against teams ranked much higher. And they are smart. Very smart. The Rutgers Ice Knights have accomplishments on the ice that can make the headlines of any sports page in the state. This is something that the team is extremely proud of. But the players on this ACHA Division 1 team are at Rutgers University for academics first, and they can make headlines in this arena as well. The following Ice Knights have recently been named Academic All-Americans… Joey Ippolito, a recent graduate, who will be attending Medical School this upcoming fall, believes that RU hockey taught him how powerful a bond can exist between teammates. With a 3.599 GPA as a cell biology and neuroscience major, Ippolito says “I will hold some great memories close forever, and utilize the lessons learned to benefit my future career.” Jackson Udelsman, an accounting major who graduated this past spring with a 3.514 GPA, will be working at the prestigious PricewaterhouseCoopers in the fall, located in New York City. Udelsman believes that Rutgers Hockey taught him “the value of hard work.” Nick “Slash” Kashmanian, a mathematics and statistics major, as well as a music minor, graduated with an overall 3.25 GPA. “I am pursuing my aspirations as a professional musician with my band, Lethal Affection” says Kashmanian. “If this fails, I am looking forward to pursuing a career in statistics and data mining. Hopefully, I can use my RU hockey connections to get a job in statistics of athletics. My 4 years of hockey at RU have shaped me into a much stronger willed and dedicated human being and I hope nothing but success for the team in the future.” Assistant captain T.J. Fiorillo, who graduated with a 3.456 GPA in Journalism and Media Studies. While at Rutgers, T.J. was the Sports Director for the RUtv network, which provided him invaluable field experience. As a result of this, and his hard work in the classroom, T.J. has accepted a full-time position as a Production Assistant with Comcast Sportsnet – Philadelphia. The Ice Knights are also very proud of recent graduate Joe Kubrak, who finished with an impressive 3.1 GPA as a Civil Engineering major. “Right now I am working with Kiewit Infrastructure up in MA building a power plant,” says Kubrak. “Rutgers Hockey has been extremely helpful in helping me learn how to best manage my time. With a full schedule of engineering classes and going away every weekend for games, it seemed like I didn’t have much time to study. But as time progressed I slowly learned. Now that I’m working, things don’t seem too overwhelming when someone comes by my desk and drops off a load of work for me to do with a deadline.” The team will also have Academic All-Americans Matt Ruthberg, 3.464 GPA, Brandon De Libero, 3.536 GPA, and Will Bolinder, 3.980 GPA back in the fall for their final season of hockey at Rutgers. The Rutgers Ice Knights have proven that student athletes can have success in the classroom and on the ice. -written by Lisa Zola-DeLibero
